Experiment

Split-flap panel

Mechanical Solari departure boards, recreated in the browser with plain DOM elements and CSS 3D transforms.

Mechanism

Alphabet cycle
Frozen at −45°

Under the hood

Each character is a single slat: a static panel plus two halves that fold down and back up, about 110 milliseconds per flip. To reach a new letter it walks forward through the alphabet one step at a time, the way a real chain-driven board does, so you watch the letters in between fly past. It is all regular DOM elements and CSS 3D transforms, with no canvas or video.
