awhile
A meditation timer, stripped to the essentials

I created awhile as a focused meditation timer, guided by Dieter Rams’ principle of “less, but better.” I wanted the product to do a small number of things well: help someone set aside time, settle into a session, and finish without distraction.
I designed and built the native iPhone app in SwiftUI, carrying that restraint through its controls, motion, sound, and App Store release.
Removing sign-in
I removed Sign in with Apple because awhile did not need a separate account. Preferences and streaks could sync through the device’s existing iCloud account, allowing the app to open directly to the timer.
Timer dial
I used a dial to make setting a duration feel like one deliberate action. Five-minute increments and haptic feedback give it the tactile quality of a physical control. Less frequently changed sound and chime settings sit separately, keeping the timer focused.

Meditation session
The session moves from a short quote into a gentle breathing animation. The countdown and playback controls remain available without dominating the screen, allowing someone to follow the breathing rhythm or put the phone away.
I used SwiftUI animation and custom Metal effects to shape those transitions. The opening quote returns when the session ends.

App Store release
A meditation app needs to work when someone puts the phone down. Background audio keeps the sound playing, and a Live Activity makes progress available on the Lock Screen without reopening the app.
I shipped awhile with a free meditation timer and a one-time purchase for additional sounds. There is no subscription or separate account.
